Pets can make a difference in the lives of widows by offering them unconditional love and something to think about besides their grief. Psychiatrist, Dr. Ramsay says that therapy animals have been used to rehabilitate bereaved widows with great success.  Animals have the ability to read human emotions and react to their needs. Widows often bounce back to a normal routine sooner by having an animal that needs their care and love.  Many of the widows I have spoken to talk about how it helped not having to come home to a completely empty house. If you are struggling to get out of bed or even care about anything then maybe you need a little pet therapy.  If you don't want to own a pet then consider volunteering at a pet shelter - both you and the animals will benefit from the time you spend there.

Widow from Chapter Eleven of the book "The Sisterhood of Widows"

"I’m starting to be able to be in the house without the TV on.  It’s taken a while because when Peter first died I had the dog.  He was always moving around so it felt like someone was in the house with me."
